The Bible was open, lying in my lap. I read a few verses in Psalms
then, from the corner of my eye, I noticed the television program
I had been watching had come back on. I placed a marker in
the Bible and gave my attention to the television.

When a commercial break came again, I resumed my reading-until
the commercials ended and the program resumed. Down went
the marker to hold my place, and my mind and attention
turned to the television.

Then it hit me-This is so much like our lives. We have
scheduled "programs" for our lives and given them priority. We
take occasional "commercial break" times to commune with God,
barely giving Him time to say, "Hello, how are you, today?" We pick
up our programmed activities and go on our way.

Only a crisis will cause us to reverse the order. When our world
threatens to fall apart, we put God in the program and give Him
our full attention as we try to get a handle on the spinning world
to keep from falling off and crashing.

"Seek ye first the kingdom of God when all else fails," is our unspoken
rule. But that's not the program God has ordained. "Seek ye first
the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things
shall be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33).

Even a primary student knows what "first" means-before anything
else. God must be very tired of waiting for life's "commercial breaks"
to talk to us and listen to our hurried words to him-so we can
get back to our programs.

"The steps of a good man [and woman] are ordered by the Lord
and he delighteth in his way" (Psalm 37:23). Good, as in
redeemed and filled with God's goodness, not our self-righteousness.
God's program is that we put Him first, not just wait for a break-time
to fit Him in. That gives Him license to direct our steps and guide
our lives in a way that will delight Him and create a blessed way for us.

With a new year ahead of us, would it not be a good time to
re-program our habits so that God has priority on our time
and everything else will be operated during the breaks that we
previously assigned to God? That would "delight" Him, and "it is
he which worketh in you both to will [subjective impulse, implanted
desire to please God] and to do of his good pleasure"
(Philippians 2:13).

When we put Him first, He plants the will/want-to/desire to give
His will pre-eminence; performance follows the desire. God is
pleased, and we are blessed with that program.

Reach for the remote-not just the television, but life itself. Click
on: "Heaven's will." Thy will be done in earth, as it is in
heaven." (Matthew 6:10).
His will performed in earth has heavenly rewards and earthly benefits.

No more "break-time" communication, but the connection
is constant and two-way.

"What are your plans for me today, God?"

This is the day the Lord hath made: Rejoice!
Have a Blessed New Year!
